Hi! My name is Caiti. I live with my person, Jake, and our beast, Major, in Baltimore, MD.
We moved to the city in 2015, and ever since I’ve been searching for ways to remain connected to the earth, learn new skills, and embrace a self sufficient lifestyle. I care deeply about the environment, and I think it is important to work towards lower food waste, sustainable agriculture, and reduced consumerism. In the city I felt disheartened at first, as it often seemed that no one shared these concerns.
Yet even with the best ideals it can be hard work to live up to them. Eating seasonally and supporting local businesses is awesome! But I can’t do it all the time, and it is a learning process for me to research foods and seasons as well as plan ahead for the rest of the agricultural calendar. I am constantly trying new projects, learning new skills, and losing sleep when my jam doesn’t set or I am determined to root out every squash bug in the garden. My life is a work in progress, and I aspire to take care of the earth, teach and learn with others, and nurture a community of neighboring souls to work with.
It can be done, even and perhaps especially in the city. All of these endeavors are under the roof of my urban homestead – an outpost amongst the hustle and bustle of city life. If you choose to read this blog, you’ll find records of my efforts to learn, cook, grow, live sustainably, and always eat well! I’m posting recipes, preserving guides, urban gardening tips, foraging spots, and interesting things to learn around town. This blog is a window into my journey to envision an alternative to a consumerist mindset and live an empowered life. I hope you join me.
